FAQs

A lot of blogs have FAQ pages so I thought I'd join in the fun. FAQs is really a misnomer, because none of these questions are frequently asked per se, but I couldn't think of a better title for this page.

{this is a page in progress. I have the intention of updating it throughout the next few weeks, so stay tuned!}

What camera do you have?
I got my first DSLR, a Canon T3i, in January, 2012. Since then, I'd say about 90% of the pictures that show up on my blog are taken with that camera. I also have a Canon G10 (current model is the G12), which is a great point & shoot/pseudo DSLR with all of it's manual settings. Occasionally I will use my husband's Kodak Easyshare M52.

Which accessories do you recommend for a DSLR?
By no means am I an expert photographer. I took a basic digital photography class in college, but am otherwise self-taught. And I still have a lot of learning to do. So, if you're a novice like me, I have one recommendation for you above all others... the Lightscoop! This little contraption is on my T3i nearly 100% of the time. It won't work outside, so keep that in mind based on what kind of photography you plan on doing with your DSLR. Check out this blog post for a comparison with using and not using the Lightscoop.

I have a few other accessories for my camera but haven't played around with them enough to recommend them yet. As I get more comfortable with my camera I will update this section with more information.

Do you edit your photos?
Not all the time, but I recommend anyone that has a digital camera have digital editing software on their computer. A great free, downloadable program is Picasa, from Google. I don't use this program for editing photos really (although it has that capability), but it is what I use to make all the photo collages you see on my blog.

For actual editing I use PhotoShop Elements. I try to take great SOOC (straight out of camera) photos that don't require any PhotoShopping, but occasionally I will tweak my photos a bit.

Also check out Pixlr, they have some really fun effects you can add to your photos. I used the site when editing the photos from our maternity photo shoot (which I took using my G10, a tripod and the self-timer).

Was Harry a surprise?
I don't have enough fingers to count how many times I've been asked this one :). Short answer, yes and no, haha! It's pretty easy to prevent getting pregnant if you don't want a baby. So, we knew perfectly well what could happen without birth control. Check out how we found out about our little baby here!

Did you circumcise?
Ugh, I hate this question. What my son's penis looks like isn't something I'm willing to discuss here on my blog. Genitals are called privates for a reason. If you really want to know, you'll have to ask Harry. But I have a feeling he won't answer either ;)

Did you have pre-eclampsia?
When I was in labor my doctor and nurses treated me as if I had pre-eclampsia even though none of my three 24 hour urinalysises indicated that I did. I was put on magnesium sulfate prior to delivering as a preventative measure. After delivery my doctor told me most likely I did not have pre-eclampsia, just the hypertension, which is now a chronic problem.

Do you want more kids?
I used to want three kids, but two is sounding more like the perfect number after all my pregnancy complications, we shall see!  We will have to prepare a lot more for our next child than we did with Harry because of my now-chronic hypertension. It's dangerous to get pregnant on my current medication and going back on bed rest and over night hospital stays would be very difficult with a small baby to look after.

What's hypertension?
Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure. It developed during the second trimester of my pregnancy. Most pregnant women who develop hypertension go on to have normal blood pressure after delivering their babies. Unfortunately for me it has turned in to a chronic problem. After giving birth I was referred to a general practitioner who is helping me manage my condition. Along with the medication I'm on I try to eat a low-sodium diet, but admittedly I'm struggling with that since salt is in just about everything we eat.

What eyeliner do you use?
I have used so many different kinds of eyeliners. And yet I always go back to the first eyeliner I ever bought, the Ulta brand eyeliner. The eyeliner is really waterproof and stays on all.freaking.day. I use the black, which I know is a bit harsh for a lot of people, but I like it!

What sorority were you in?
I was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.

Why don't you wear your wedding ring?
I dunno. I took it off when Harry was about a month old and have only worn it a few times since. I really should wear it more, it's very pretty. Wanna see?

I'm kind of a jewelry snob and had a carat requirement for my ring. It really helped that I worked at a jewelry store when we purchased my ring! The rings are by Coast Diamonds and are made of palladium, which I highly recommend if you're shopping for an engagement ring. It's more cost effective than platinum and more durable than gold, win win!

Was your husband really on Wheel of Fortune?
Yep! He was a contestant on the show during "Big 12 Week" back in 2005. Need proof?

He made it to the Bonus Round but unfortunately missed the final puzzle (the answer was Hiking Boots). He ended up winning a nice chunk of change and a trip to Italy.

Where does Ant work?
He is a writer/editor for a large news agency in Chicago. His hours are pretty crazy. He's been with the agency since January, 2011 and really likes what he does.
