The Dirty 30

So, my birthday was Saturday. The birthday. The one where you're supposed to stop telling people how old you really are and just say 29. Gah, I don't feel like I'm mature enough to be 30. It's just so grown up!

To celebrate, Ant and I went out for dinner on Friday night. The park district was offering a parent's night out so we dropped Harry off before heading out. We just went up to the mall, and ate at Stir Crazy. It used to be one of our favorite places! Was nice to go back. We spent about 3 hours eating and walking around before heading back to pick up Harry.

He had a great time despite being the youngest kid there (a 5 year old girl was the closest in age to him). They made cookies, ate hot dogs, played games and did crafts. Oh, and apparently he got to have 2 glasses of lemonade- a real treat since he only drinks water or milk at home. The park district has the parent's night out every so often, so I'm sure we'll sign up again.

Oh, and in case you noticed that little fleck on the side of my nose, it's not dirt, I got it pierced. Again. I got it done for the first time when I was 20 and took it out for a job after college. It was a bit of an impulse decision earlier this week. Ant's been wanting a tattoo, so we went to Top Notch Tattoos to speak with an artist about a design. While we were there Ant said to go for the piercing if I wanted, as an early birthday present. I thought it would hurt more the second time around because of scar tissue (I got it done in the exact same spot), but it hardly hurt at all. And my eyes barely watered, the first time it was like water works on the right side of my face.

Saturday morning the boys woke me up with my favorite, Taco Bell breakfast in bed. And Harry surprised me with some fantastic presents.

Earlier in the week Ant took Harry to the Dollar Tree to pick out some gifts for me. Apparently he picked out everything on his own, he did a pretty good job I think, he knows me well. Along with the nose piercing, Ant let me pick out some Makeup Geek eye shadows and I should be getting a new cell phone in the next couple weeks- mine sucks and is anything but "smart" these days. I'd say I made out pretty well!

After dinner that night it was time for cake. Harry picked the theme, Frozen, of course.

My name's a little smooshed, but that's okay ;) It tasted great (another Super Target cake) and I loved the candles they picked out.

LOL! And funnily enough, we'll be able to use the same ones next year!

 Here's to making 30 great!!

Cauliflower and Ipsy

Last night I made the most delicious cauliflower dish for dinner. It was too good not to share!

It's the Whole Roasted Cauliflower with Cheddar Beer Sauce recipe from Joy the Baker's blog. I followed the recipe pretty exact, except I used less salt and 2% milk instead of whole.

Ohhhhhh so good! And filling enough as a main dish- I cut it in to quarters. I will say, if I make it again I'd probably use a little less red pepper flakes, but that's just my taste.

From food to makeup... here's my latest Ipsy bag!

La Fresh Eco-Beauty Good Day. Day Moisturizer
Manna Kadar Sheer Glo
Hikari Eye Liner in Storm
Pacifica Natural Mineral Coconut Eyeshadow in Treasure (couldn't find just the eyeshadow for sale)
Malin + Goetz Mojito Lip Balm

I haven't gotten to try everything, but so far I am loving the lip balm! It looks like a clear gel and feels so nice on my lips. A perfect product for the dry winter.

Ipsy costs $10 a month, and the value of everything in January's bag was $54, $14 more than last month's! I've really enjoyed the bags I've gotten so far, can't wait to see what I'll get next month.

3.2

The last month will officially be known as the sickest month ever- and not in the cool, rock n' roll way.

1/7/15

-So, his sickness. I mentioned he was sick over Christmas. We thought he was getting better. And he really seemed to be, except for a nasty cough at night. Last Sunday night he coughed himself awake and threw up because of the excessive, forceful coughing. Luckily, we had a follow-up hearing test at the doctor's scheduled for the next morning, so I mentioned the cough during the appointment.

As usual, Harry failed the hearing test. But this time it was because there's a bunch of fluid in his ears. Poor little guy! So, he was put on a round of antibiotics. His first. Was all going fine, until yesterday. He woke up with a huge rash all over his body. Google told us it was due to the antibiotics, and talking with the nurse confirmed it. So, now we're off the meds. Ugh, can't the poor kid catch a break?!?

- On a funnier note, he's weirdly obsessed with time right now. He's constantly asking me what time is it, and looking around to find a clock. He's getting pretty good at telling time (on a digital clock, of course), although I don't think he fully gets the concept quite yet.

- He's been asking to watch a movie almost every day. If he had his way, it'd be all Frozen, all the time! His other favorite is probably Monsters, Inc., but we've also watched Cars, Planes and Shrek 2 (we don't have the first one). We need to get Toy Story, I bet he'd love that one!

- A couple cute things he's said:
"Today I feel a little better, tomorrow I'll feel a big better."
"I want a regular happy meal with chicken nuggets, that's good for my throat."

Vernon Hills' Winter Wonderland

Our family started 2015 off with a little leftover Christmas cheer. Friday night we drove up to Vernon Hills to experience their annual Winter Wonderland Christmas light show.

We'd been talking about going up there for a couple years but never did for one reason or another. Then last week Ant saw that this would most likely be the last year for the show, so we made it a point to visit before it was too late.

It really was something! The light show is on the grounds of a mansion (it was featured in My Best Friend's Wedding, apparently), and featured thousands of lights. We got there right as the show opened, and still had to wait in line for about a half hour before entering.

Once we got on the grounds I switched to the backseat and took Harry out of his car seat so he could see the lights, too. The show is meant to be seen from your car, and we were literally going at idle speed. It took about a half hour to drive through the whole thing and, as I said, it was really something! I'm glad we got to experience it.

Here are a few pictures. They don't do the show justice!

After we were done, Harry begged to go back through. He loved the lights so much! 'Twas cute :). We were all starving on the way back home and pulled in to the first restaurant we could find- a Denny's. Breakfast for dinner all around!

Ringing in 2015

Happy New Year!

Crazy how another year has come and gone, and we are now in 2015. I remember celebrating the year 2000 very clearly, it's hard to believe it was so long ago!

Wednesday morning Harry and I went to a Noon Year's Eve party at our park district. Another great event! I was really impressed with how smoothly it all ran and there were more than enough staff members helping, which was really appreciated.

We made two crafts (both noise makers), played a game of BINGO, had a little dance party, ate a snack, and just before noon we did a big countdown complete with a balloon drop.

From the event's Facebook page

M&Ms were our BINGO pieces and he didn't eat a single one! Surprise of the year :)

We had a nice time! And it was great to get out of the house during the day, Harry's been missing school so much during Christmas break!

We didn't do much to celebrate the actual new year... we did the Netflix kid's countdown after dinner and then after Harry went to sleep Ant and I watched Gone Girl on DVD (one of this year's screeners for being in the Writer's Guild). That was a crazy movie! I haven't read the book, so I can't compare, but I think I liked it. It was definitely captivating, but I'm not so sure about the ending.

We switched the movie off halfway through to watch the midnight countdown and enjoy a glass of champagne.

I'm looking forward to this year! I sense some good things coming (knock on wood). As far as resolutions go? Wear makeup more often- I hate looking so sloppy all the time- and do Swagbucks more! I was really good with the site in 2013 and totally slacked last year. It's really worth it IMO! Plus the usual eat healthier, work out more, etc. ;)
