3 Years Old

I like doing these updates and the monthly pictures. They're fun to have lined up in his scrapbooks! #oldhabitsdiehard

11/7/14

  • We've actually made a lot of progress in the potty training this month! It started with bribing him to go #2 with a trip to the dollar store a few weeks ago. It worked, and he's been consistently going ever since! Not every day, but we're getting there.
  • In high school psychology class I learned about Freud's Oedipus Complex. It's a little ridiculous, but Harry has been acting very strange towards Ant lately and seems to really favor me. Like, he only wants me to help him go potty, blow on his hot food, help him get up when he falls, etc. If Ant offers to help he gets upset. Hoping he grows out of this soon.
  • We had his 3 year checkup at the doctor's the other day. Stats: 29 pounds, 38 inches. He got to use the "big boy" scale and ruler for the first time. He kept his clothes on, which added to his weight- no way he gained 3 pounds in 6 months.
He had to get a blood draw and wasn't phased by it at all! He just sat there like nothing was happening. The Daniel Tiger episode where he gets a shot really prepared him!
And... surprise, surprise, he failed his hearing test again! They did it twice and both times it came up as referral (as in being referred to an ENT). His ears are full of wax so I got special ear drops to help get rid of it. The doctor is pretty confident that's what's causing him to fail. We have a follow up appointment in about a month, crossing my fingers he'll pass. I really don't think he has a problem hearing, but if he does, obviously I want to see a specialist.
  • The other day Harry locked himself in our bedroom for the first time. It really wasn't that big of a deal- he unlocked the door a minute later. Buuuut, there were a few moments of panic.
  • We had his first parent/teacher conference at school just before his birthday. It went well, and the teachers had nice things to say about Harry. One thing surprised me- he doesn't dance in class! Yes, my little boy, who does this on a daily basis, doesn't dance in class. Wha?!? He's quiet and reserved at school they said. A great helper and he listens well to instruction. He likes to stand back and observe whats going on with the other kids. There's another little boy in class who has a similar demeanor to Harry so it's nice that they get to be in school together.
  • A few cute things he's said.
    • "Today I'm six, tomorrow I'm going to be nine." He thinks "sick" is "six," haha!
    • "Can you hand me a hand?" When he needs help getting up from the floor.
    • "Let's go watch the news, guys." -Harry
"You want to watch the news?" - Dad
      "No, I'm just joking." -Harry

Shop Miss A Haul- Everything's $1!

I've always been a makeup lover, but the past few years I haven't worn it much. I'd guess once a week at most. Recently I've really made an effort to wear it more, even if it's just a bit of foundation and mascara. It's surprising how a 2 minute makeup routine can affect my confidence!

With wearing more makeup I've also wanted to learn new about new techniques and products. While watching some of the YouTube beauty vloggers I came across one who did a makeup and accessories haul from Shop Miss A, where every item is just $1! Yes, seriously!

Am I late to the party? I'd never heard of this site before, but there are tons of Shop Miss A hauls on YouTube. Every one I watched raved about them so after looking around the site I had to place an order.

Here's my first order from Shop Miss A.

shop miss a haul

14 items for $14! Plus $3.95 for shipping, which isn't too bad. My package came super quick and was wrapped in two layers of bubble wrap and some cute orange tissue paper. Everything was nice and secure.

As seen in the picture, I got tons of Elf makeup stuff. They have other brands, too, but for this order I stuck with what I was familiar with. The three tubes at the top of the picture are all over face colors. I'm plan on trying out some contouring techniques with them. The lipsticks and lip liner are pretty and I can't wait to try out the different brushes. I've never used false eyelashes, so I'm excited to play with those, but I'm not expecting it to go too well ;).

I tried the circle tip guides for a half moon manicure over the weekend... major fail. My expectations for the French tip ones are low, but we shall see. I really like the necklace I got- it also came with a pair of studs that I won't be wearing, they're not nickel free and my ears are sensitive to that.

All in all I was very pleased with my order and will definitely be ordering from Shop Miss A again. I know shops like this sometimes seem to good to be true, but I'm vouching for them- it's all true :).

Now I know you're going to head over to the site to check it out, so happy shopping!!

Rocksbox-- Get a Free Month :)

A few months ago I received an invitation to join to Rocksbox, a jewelry subscription service. I've had a lot of fun with the jewelry they've sent me. Each box contains 3 pieces (valued around $200!), and they're usually coordinated so you can wear them together, or separately.

To start, you fill out a survey so stylists can learn about what your likes and dislikes for style (vintage, modern, boho, classic, etc.) and type of jewelry (necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets, etc.).

Here's what my first Rocksbox included.

House of Harlow 1960: Sunburst Button Earrings
Gorjana: Chevron Pendant Necklace
Wanderlust + Co: X Double Crystal Gold Ring

I liked my first box, but the ring wasn't really my style. I wore the chevron necklace a ton, one of my favorite pieces to date! With Rocksbox, you can choose to purchase the items (at a discount), or return them. Typically I've kept each box for 2-3 weeks before sending them back- shipping labels are included and the envelopes are reusable so it doesn't cost you anything extra.

I forgot to take a picture of my second box, but it included 2 necklaces and a bracelet that I almost bought. I couldn't find it on the Rocksbox website, but it was by Nakamol Chicago, similar to this one. So cute and unique! Loved the style.

Here's my third box.

House of Harlow 1960: Aztec Bangle
Gorjana: Elea Cuff
Charlene K: Raw Stone Pendant Necklace

This last box was probably my favorite, I loved the Aztec bangle and necklace. I wore them a bunch (you can see them in the picture of Harry and me at his birthday dinner).

I just sent the box back and can't wait for my next one. I requested a couple of the Gorjana necklaces featured on the site, so I'm hoping to try one or two out next. I'll post a pic on my IG when it comes.

If you're into jewelry, I think you'll have a lot of fun with Rocksbox. If you'd like to try it, CLICK HERE to get a free month! You could easily get 2-3 boxes in if you wanted in that time. The code for the free month is only good through Sunday, November 16, 2014, so hurry and sign up now!

(Rocksbox provided me with a complimentary subscription. All opinions are 100% my own.)

Birthday Weekend

I think Harry had a great time turning 3! Friday Harry and I picked up a few cupcakes from Deerfield's and just hung around until Ant got home from work. When he got home, Harry was more than game for opening presents.

The main present we got Harry was this city rug to play on. It's huge and a lot of fun! The little Hot Wheels cars fit perfectly with it.

After presents we went to the Rainforest Cafe for dinner. Every time we go to the mall Harry likes to stop and look at the alligator and other animals outside the restaurant. I thought it would be a lot of fun for him for a special birthday dinner.

We sat right across from the gorillas and Harry had a blast watching them "wake up." We also sat next to the rain and he thought it was hilarious when he got splashed with water.

After we finished our yummy food, we drove back home for some birthday cupcakes.

He blew out all 3 candles with no help.

The only thing Harry wanted for his birthday was a Thomas the Tank Engine cake. We ordered it from the Target bakery and took it over to my dad's on Saturday for a little party.

Didn't it turn out nice?!? I was so impressed with the bakery. Apparently the Thomas design had been discontinued at the beginning of the month. When we went to order it Harry picked a Sesame Street design instead. But, they called us later that day to say they had found one last Thomas set. How nice of them! So, in the end he got the cake he really wanted.

We ordered marble cake with butter cream frosting. It tasted SO GOOD. SOOOOO GOOD. Way better than Jewel cakes, IMO. All my store bought cakes are coming from Target from now on, ha!

We're all either getting over being sick or are sick so we didn't do much else, but, all in all it was a great weekend. Harry's been wanting to go bowling so we're gonna try and do that soon. Ant's working overnights this week and we're planning to go one morning after he gets home.

Three.

Today snuck up on me, even though the date's been mentioned for months in our house. I don't know if I'm fully prepared to be the mother of a three year old. But, I don't really have a choice, now do I? Time marches on, and as of 8:12 this evening, we'll have a three year old on our hands.

Happy birthday, not-so-little boy.

I remember his birth pretty well. As well as the 24 hours leading up to it- my blood pressure was scary high and I had a feeling I'd be meeting my baby within hours. I kept saying "11-7-11" to myself. I knew that would be his birthday. Pretty sure I had those intuitions because I was unknowingly in the early stages of labor, I don't think anyone was more surprised than me when my doctor told me I was in active labor at my checkup the next morning! (I was about 4 weeks from my due date and we were preparing for a c-section)

The last 3 years have been incredible. Not always happy, not always easy, but always incredible. Always purposeful.

I see so much of myself in him. I'm not trying to brag or discount Ant in anyway, it's just a fact. Harry and I are cut from the same cloth. I get deja vu all the time with him. We react the same way to situations. We have the same mannerisms. It catches me off guard sometimes and brings back memories I didn't know I had. He's literally my "mini me."

Although, I do have to say, I think he's sweeter than I was at this age. A little more compassionate. Last night he planted 6 or 7 big kisses on me before bed- my last two year old kisses. He tells me he misses Ant while he's at work a lot.

I'm sure I've mentioned it, but he's becoming fiercely independent. Harry doesn't want help with anything! And when I'm doing something he usually asks if he can help. He's become an expert grocery put-awayer.

He has a bright imagination and is genuinely funny. He's also shy and crazy and timid and silly. Very smart and uniquely creative. Just the perfect kid for us. We couldn't have asked for anyone better.

Harry's definitely excited for his birthday this year. We taught him when his birthday was back in July or August, so he's been anticipating this day for a while now. The only thing he asked for was a Thomas the Tank Engine cake. He loves looking at the display cakes at the Target bakery and that one has been on his mind for months. I hope he loves it!

A cute and quick Instagram video from last night.

Here's to another great year... THREE!

Low Key Halloween

We ended up skipping trick-or-treating on Friday night. Harry wasn't 100% and the weather was pretty terrible- it snowed that morning even! To make up for it, we let Harry do some trick-or-treating at home. Ant and I went in to the bedrooms, closed the doors and had Harry knock and ask for candy. He did it about 10 times and had fun. We tried to get him to dress up in his costume, but he just wanted to wear dinosaur PJs.

Saturday afternoon we went over to my dad's and Harry rang the door a couple times and got his pumpkin bucket filled with candy.

Harry stayed with my dad while Ant and I ran a couple errands. For dinner we got Moe's. Which, I just might like more than Chipotle. Controversial choice, I know.

Sunday we did Harry's annual birthday photo shoot. I can't wait to share the pictures on Friday!
