Toddler Bed Transition... Take 2

Sooooooo.... it finally happened. Harry is sleeping in his own bed, in his own room. Wait.... did you hear what I said? HARRY IS SLEEPING IN HIS OWN BED.

As I've mentioned multiple times, we've been cosleeping with Harry since a little after his first birthday. After 8 months we tried to transition him to a toddler bed. Total fail. And then last month we moved his mattress to our room to see if he'd sleep there. Nope.

A couple weeks ago it was really stuffy in our bedroom so we moved Harry's mattress back to his room to make room for a pedestal fan. On a whim we thought we'd try to get Harry in the toddler bed, not ever thinking it would work.

After our normal bedtime routine, Ant said good night and went to bed in our room (he goes to bed early because of his work schedule). I told Harry I would sit with him for 10 minutes and then leave. Because honestly, I had some stuff to get done and didn't want to wait there for hours just to have him wake up in and switch to the other bed. I figured as soon as I left Harry would make his way to Ant and that would be the end of that.

Well... as I was leaving I told him to stay in his bed. And, he did! He cried for about 30 seconds, and for the next 40 minutes I'd hear him call out "mommy" every so often. But, I stayed strong and didn't give in. Then... radio silence. He fell asleep!!! All on his own!!!!!! In his own bed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He stayed there all night and didn't wake up until after 7am the next morning.

The next night was even easier, no crying or calling out for me at all. The third night Ant stayed with him for the 10 minutes and there were no issues. I've treated nap time the same way, and it's gone pretty well, too. A little more difficult to get him to stay in his bed, but not too bad. Consistency in the routine is key.

He's slept in his room every night since that first night, but I'll be honest, a few nights were rough. Once he woke up four times and we basically had to start over each time. And some nights he'll cry when I leave, usually just for a few minutes. But,  I think I can officially say that our days of cosleeping are over. And even though I was against bed sharing at first, I will look back on all those nights fondly. I'm so lucky to have gotten so many extra snuggles before he's old enough to think they're uncool.

How the transition happened so fast is beyond me. One week he wouldn't even sleep on a mattress next to our bed and the next he started falling asleep in a room all on his own. Harry was clearly ready and just needed a little nudge to start. He really is growing up!
