Thanksgiving Recap

I hope you all had a nice holiday! Our Thanksgiving was a lot different than last year's, which we just spent as a little family of three. We went over to my dad's house for dinner where they hosted well over 30 people. It was a little chaotic, but lots of fun, too.

Wednesday night Harry and I went over to help set up the tables with the place cards I made. My step mom came up with the design idea and I put them together with help from my trusty Cricut. I did them in three different colors and everyone thought they turned out really cute.

DSLR selfies before we left for the party.

Along with the place cards I made some stuffed mushroom appetizers. It was my first-ever attempt at stuffed 'shroomies, so I was a bit nervous that people wouldn't like them. I was very thankful to receive multiple compliments on them and both trays were gone by the end of the night.

Before we started the feast 9 year old Franco delivered the most heartfelt prayer. I was so impressed with his delivery and thoughtful words- I doubt I could ever come up with something so meaningful. We all gave him a big round of applause after he finished. Dinner was served buffet style and everything tasted so good! I wish I could have gone for seconds, but I was busy watching the little boy who insisted on standing in his chair and only ate a piece of bread and some applesauce we brought from home.

Despite not eating (I think he was just overwhelmed by everything going on) Harry had a blast and behaved really well. Franco and his younger brother were nice enough to play with him most of the night.

LOL at my brother in the background :)

We left a little before 8 o'clock and were able to get Harry down for his usual bedtime.

Ant had yesterday off and we bummed around until mid-afternoon when we went grocery shopping. Since we weren't really looking for any Black Friday deals we thought about waiting until tomorrow, but braved the crowds just to get our 20% off total purchase coupon (valid starting next week).

While shopping we found our Christmas ornaments for the year.

Our tradition is to get one new ornament each year, but as you can see, we went a little overboard. I actually bought the camera ornament a few weeks ago because it was too cute to pass up. Then yesterday I had a buy 3 get one free coupon, which is why we ended up with 4 more. Harry picked out the Abby and Elmo ornaments all by himself and in case you're wondering, the Duff Beer can is a thing from The Simpsons- one of Ant's favorite shows.

I was surprised to find that none of our ornaments (except for the Duff Beer one) have the year on them. When decorating the Christmas tree each year I love going through and seeing how long ago each ornament was purchased. I fixed our 2013 additions right up...

Perfect!

As for today, I hope I'm well enough for our plans! I started feeling kinda crummy yesterday morning, but we're hoping to take Harry to meet Santa this afternoon. I think we might try to put up our Christmas tree, too, and Ant was talking about meeting up with some coworkers at a bar after dinner.

Hope your weekend is off to a nice start!

Clothes Swap

Friday night the boys and I took a bunch of stuff down to Once Upon a Child to sell. They didn't take much, but we made abut $30 that we put towards some new stuff for Harry.

Used shoes kind of weird me out, but the snow boots we got for Harry still have the original tag on. And I'm so happy we found those jeans. They're Old Navy, size 18-24 months, and are one of 2 pairs that currently fit his skinny mini frame. Yay! They're a tad loose, but as that's a theme with all his pants, we taught him to pull them up if they're falling down.

The little paper pad is a paint with water thing I thought would be fun. Since our dining room is carpeted (one of my major gripes about our condo) I've been hesitant to show him how to paint so this was the perfect alternative. We played with it Saturday night. Harry thought it was fun for about 5 minutes :).

I think the finished masterpiece turned out great!

Yesterday morning I met up with some girlfriends for brunch. We had a fun time catching up but when I got home I had a horrible headache so I took a nap while the boys watched football.

Happy Monday- which is kind of like Wednesday this week with Thanksgiving :)

Back to the Bottle

Oh, hey there. I've been a terrible blogger lately. I have a lot going on at home and ever since Ant's schedule change back in July my time management skills have all but disappeared. The mess around our house always seems to be one step ahead of me even though I feel like I'm constantly cleaning. It's so frustrating! So my goal for the immediate future is to get my time management skills back on track. And with that will hopefully come more time to blog.

Anyways... over the weekend I was going through Harry's old clothes and found his bottles. Just for fun we filled one up with water to see what he'd do with it. It's been nearly a year since he last drank out of one, so I was surprised it had so much fun with it. He drank the whole thing!

I also wanted to share an easy, fun fall-themed craft Harry and I worked on.

Kinda fun and cute, right? Harry loves it and yells "mommy craft" every morning. He also loves the "What does the Fox Say" song and he starts singing it when I point to the little foxes.

Happy Tuesday!

2 Year Check Up

Yesterday Harry had his 2 year check up with the doctor. His stats:

  • 35.75 inches tall- I would have guessed he was taller
  • 25 pounds 10 ounces
So, in one year he's grown 4 inches and gained almost 5 pounds. I was surprised to find he's no longer in the 90th percentile for height- he now registers in the 80th and is in the 20th for weight. I brought up Harry's OCD tendencies and our doctor wasn't terribly concerned but did say it wasn't a normal developmental behavior and noted it in his file. Something to keep an eye on for sure.

Harry also got his ears tested for the third straight visit. His right ear passed as usual, but when it came time to test his left- the problem ear- he had a massive freak out and we weren't able to get a clear reading. Ugh. So sometime soon I'll be taking him back to do that ear. Hopefully for the last time!

One good thing was that he didn't have to get any shots. Harry did get the nasal spray flu vaccine though. After the doctor we drove down the street to 2Toots Grill, a train-themed restaurant.

The restaurant is covered with train decor and a little train goes all around and drops the food off at your table.

The food was basic, but decent and we went more for the atmosphere than anything else. Harry barely ate anything but loved watching the train go round and round.

After eating we stopped by my dad's house for a few minutes and then, just as the first snowflakes were starting to fall (boo!!!!!), we drove up to Woodfield Mall. My stepsister works at a kids store and gave us a friends and family discount card. We got Harry a few shirts, a pair of jeans and some boots. None of his pants fit very well and I think now he'll finally have some jeans that aren't too short or too loose, so yay!

Birthday Fun

Even though we didn't have a big party, Harry's second birthday was still a lot of fun! He got to do lots of celebrating and got a bunch of awesome gifts.

On Thursday, his actual birthday, we took him to Funflatables, a play place in the mall that is filled with different bouncy castles. Harry loves to jump so this was the perfect outlet for him. We had the entire facility to ourselves for over a half hour, which was great. The birthday boy had a great time bouncing everywhere and going down all the slides.

When we got home we opened presents. He was a lot more interested in it than last year and had a lot of fun ripping off the Sesame Street paper off his gifts.

Spot Pearl- our cat!

Harry has had fun playing with all his gifts, but I think his favorite so far is his brand new laptop. Hopefully it will work as a nice distraction from trying to play with our computers all the time.

For dinner I ordered from Pilot Pete's, one of our favorite local restaurants. Ant and I thoroughly enjoyed our meals, but Harry only ate a few bites of his grilled cheese and refused to eat his mashed potatoes. He's definitely going through the refuse-to-eat-anything phase.

Usually after refusing his meal I wouldn't allow him to have a dessert, but we obviously made an exception so he could have his birthday cake. I'm no cake decorator, but I attempted what I thought was an easy design, Muno from Yo Gabba Gabba.

Not the best execution, but Harry immediately recognized the cake to be Muno, which made me feel better about how it turned out. I actually made it through singing Happy Birthday without crying this year and he was pretty mesmerized by his candle. And didn't quite get the concept of blowing out the flame, so Daddy stepped in to help.

Saturday we celebrated again with my dad and grandma. We all went out to dinner (where Harry ate exactly 2 cherry tomatoes, 1 green bean, half a bread stick and a bite of pizza) and Harry got to open another round of presents. My grandma put together a neat family tree for Harry and I learned that we're related to 3 men who served in the Revolutionary War- how cool! I didn't take any pictures but we all had a lovely time.

He'll get to celebrate one last time next month when we go to the Yo Gabba Gabba concert, I am so excited for it!

24 Month Update

I'm still in disbelief that we have a 2 year old living with us!

11/7/13

Weight: Probably around 25 pounds. His next doctor's appointment is Monday so we'll get an official number then.

Height: Best guess is about 36 inches.

Diaper Size: 5s. In just the past few days he's started saying "poop" right before he goes, so that's awesome and a great step towards potty training I think. He got a potty seat for his birthday so we'll be trying it out soon!

Clothing Size: Still in the awkward too tall and too skinny phase. I thought all the Halloween candy would bulk him up a bit!

Eating:  Pretzels, pretzels, pretzels! He can't get enough of them. I really wish Annie's made just pretzels, but I've only ever seen them in the party mix, so we usually buy Goldfish pretzels. And I almost don't want to write this for fear of jinxing it, but he loves raw broccoli! I snack on it sometimes and offered some with a little ranch dip and he couldn't get enough. He'll eat it without the dip, too.

Sleeping: He's been such a snuggler while sleeping lately, I love it! I guess I could say I'd like to get him back in his own bed by his next birthday, but I'm really going to let him take the lead. Oh, and I think we're totally off the paci! He was getting one just at nap time for a few months and in the last couple weeks I stopped offering it. He's asked for it a few times but hasn't gotten upset when I tell him no.

Teeth: Still 20. Should stay that way until he starts loosing his baby teeth in a few years.

Communication: He does a great job of stringing ideas together, but doesn't really speak sentences yet. Like he'll say "Go....car......babies" on our way to our library class.

He also had an awesome memory. I doubt he's made his first real memory that he'll remember when he's older, but he makes sure we follow through on everything we say. And whenever I mention Grandpa he yells out "doggy" and "kitty cat." Last time we were over there he got to watch some Yo Gabba Gabba so he now talks about in relation to Grandpa.

Two.

Today is Harry's second birthday. This second year seemed to go by even faster than the first. Before we know it he'll be graduating high school and out living on his own. But, for now, I'm trying to savor every moment with my baby.

Oh, did I say baby? I mean kid. Clearly his baby days are behind him.

As always, this year had it's ups and downs. But Harry has come such a long way and is turning in to the sweetest little boy. Remember how less than a year ago we were worried about Harry's lack of speech? Now his word count is easily over 200 and a woman at the store recently commented on how incredibly talkative he is.

Some of his current favorite things:
  • Stairs. He goes up and down without any help as long as there's a railing.
  • Cell phones/tablets. We try to limit his use of electronics and only let him play under close supervision, but recently we've been letting him use them a bit more. Harry loves to "call" Elmo on Ant's phone (Elmo Calls app) and he knows how to navigate my tablet to find his games.
  • Stuffed animals/toys. He hugs and kisses them and puts them to "night night."
  • Candy. We can thank trick-or-treating last week for introducing him to the wonderful world of confections. He ate way more than he should have on Halloween, but since then we've limited him to just a couple treats a day. His favorite seems to be M&Ms, but he isn't picky.
  •  Crafts. I have a feeling he's going to be very creative. He loves doing simple crafts with me.
  • Sports. He recognizes the 4 main ones- baseball, football, hockey and basketball- and makes sure to alert you when one of them is on TV. We took him bowling a couple weeks ago which was fun-ish (we went during nap time- big mistake!) and I keep telling Ant he should take him to a local high school basketball game.

Some favorite Harry-centric posts from the last year:
No big party this year, but we do have some fun stuff planned for today. And he'll get to celebrate his birthday again next month when we take him to the Yo Gabba Gabba concert. I can't wait!

So, happy birthday, Harry. You are without a doubt the most amazing person I've ever met. Your sweet demeanor and silly personality melt my heart every day. I love you more than anything and being your mother has been the biggest blessing of my life.

Back in the Rocker

Just a couple pictures I've been meaning to post. From a few weeks ago. Remember when he looked like this in his rocker? We used that thing so much his first year. Annnnd, now his second year is almost over. Much more on that tomorrow!

Enjoy your Wednesday.

First Time Trick-or-Treating

We had the best Halloween yesterday! Harry and I kicked off the celebrations bright and early with a breakfast date at IHOP. They were giving away free pancakes to kids. A pancake covered in whipped cream, cookies and candy corn. Sugar overload! Had I realized it was going to be so unhealthy I probably would have skipped it, but we had fun. And Harry reminded us all day he got to eat cookies for breakfast.

When Ant got home from work we got ready and headed over to my dad's for some trick-or-treating. We didn't take Harry last year so this was a first- aside from the little we did at the zoo Sunday.

It rained all afternoon but the weather started to cooperate just as we headed out the door. We even caught glimpse of a beautiful rainbow.

As far as trick-or-treating, Harry did great! I was expecting us to just hit up a few houses but we did a couple blocks. Harry was shy at first and only said "trick-or-treat" a few times but he really enjoyed walking around and picking out the candy. He managed to fill up half of his pumpkin, although a lot of it is grandpa's candy he sneaked into the bucket. My step-mom and sister also put together a cute little basket for Harry, which was so sweet.

After we got back to my dad's we hung out for a bit and Harry helped pass out candy to all the kids that stopped by. Harry loves their dog, Caesar, but last night Caesar was especially jealous of our little Prince. Harry was trying to sit in a chair and that didn't fly with the dog. It was pretty funny.

The three of us headed home about 7 o'clock and had a late hodge podge dinner. I wish I had taken a few more pictures but we were having too much fun and my camera stayed in my pocket most of the night.

Happy November 1st!
