Brushing Baby's Gums

Did you guys love Ant's guest post earlier? I thought he did a great job on it. Thanks for writing it, Antie-poo!

Earlier in the week I received the Grins & Giggles Infant Tooth & Gum Cleanser kit from Amazon.

I almost went with this one, but it doesn't come with toothpaste and I like the idea of getting Harry used to it before any of his teeth come in. Last night Ant brushed our sweet baby's mouth for the first time.

Harry didn't seem to mind it. But, at his age he automatically starts to suck on anything that goes in his mouth. As that reflux goes away and he starts intentionally sucking he might not like it as much, so that's why I wanted to start so early.

Oh, and the toothpaste is banana and apple flavored, who wouldn't love that? The kit is safe for babies three months and older and doesn't contain fluoride, making it safe to swallow. The directions recommend brushing twice a day, but we'll probably stick to once a day until his teeth appear.

Guest Post: Ant's Thoughts On Fatherhood

When I first found out I was going to be a dad, I was extremely excited. Then, as things started to settle in, I realized that this is going to be a lot of hard work. As we started buying baby items and clothes, I knew I needed to learn as much as I could about babies. I looked up a few things online and Lindsey bought me a book for dads-to-be. It had a lot of good advice and insight, but the ultimate message was to learn as you go because every baby is different. Honestly, I didn’t really buy that at first. I mean, babies are babies. They cry, sleep, poop and repeat for the first few months. I was wrong.

Harry Desmond was born on November 7, 2011. Almost immediately I realized that things were going to be different than anything I’d heard or read. He was premature and needed to stay in the NICU for six days. It was tough, but it helped fortify the bond I have with him. But then he came home.
Harry has been the best baby a parent could ask for. Sleeping full nights starting at four weeks old, staying calm through most circumstances and growing at an exceptional rate. He’s no longer considered by the doctor to be hindered by his premature birth. In less than four months, Harry has grown six and a half inches. That’s nuts. However, the moment that made me really feel like a dad was a few weeks ago. Lindsey took Harry out to a friend's and was gone a couple of hours. When they got home I went to say hello to my son and he looked up and gave me a big smile like he missed me. As sappy as it sounds, that moment warmed my heart. Harry recognized me as his father and was happy to see me. Ever since then, Harry and I spend a lot of time in deep “conversations.”

Every day with my son is automatically a great day, and that streak will continue on for the rest of my days. I want to thank my wife for being a total rock star during childbirth and for being such an amazing mom to Harry. And I would like to thank Harry for being the best baby imaginable. I can’t wait to see what you grow up to be.

Pinterest Meal Ideas

I'm sure a lot of you have discovered the amazingness of Pinterest. If you're not familiar, it's a website that acts as a giant bulletin board. You can pin any image from any website to Pinterest to keep it for later. Like for instance, I have a crafts board with different crafts I'd like to try and a baby board where I keep stuff I think Harry would like. My favorite board is my food and drink board where I've pinned different recipes.

I hadn't made any of my pinned recipes yet so last night I made Chicken and Cheese Lasagna Roll-ups and Zucchini Parmesan.

Holy cow, the roll-ups were awesome! I divided the recipe in half since one third of our household is on an all-liquid diet and making eight roll-ups seemed a little excessive. I used all reduced fat cheeses and I sprinkled a little garlic in the chicken mixture.

I usually sauté zucchini, so broiling them was something different for me. Along with the Parmesan cheese I added a bit of garlic because you can never have enough garlic.  Ant said he liked the broiled zucchini better, so I guess I'll be doing that from now on; it's actually a lot quicker than sautéing, so that's fine by me!

I would highly recommend both of these recipes. The entire meal took about an hour to make, which wasn't too bad considering the roll-ups cook in the oven for about a half hour.

And just for fun, here are a bunch of pix I took of Harry on Thursday. He is getting so big and is so much more alert than he was even a couple weeks ago. It's just amazing to watch this little boy grow and learn new things every day!

He looks so goofy in the middle one :).

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

White Sox Game

After a two week hiatus, Flashback Friday is back! This week's photo is brought to you by the year 2006.

I've mentioned before that we met in Columbia, Missouri while in college. A few months after we started dating we took our first road trip to watch the Kansas City Royals play Ant's favorite baseball team, the Chicago White Sox.

If I remember correctly, we heard the same Jewel song on the radio both going to and from the ball park. How random is my memory?!? There were quite a few White Sox fans at the game and it was nice for Ant because his team won (I couldn't have cared less).

Ant bought me the t-shirt since I didn't have one. I think I still have it buried somewhere in my closet. And while I don't have that particular pair of sunglasses anymore, I'm still rockin' a very similar pair. What can I say, I'm a creature of habit.

Ever since that game we've gone to a Sox game every summer up until 2011 (pregnancy is a fun excuse!). Of the other four games we've attended together three were at their home stadium and one was the Chicago Cubs stadium for the Cross Town Classic.

I know Ant can't wait to take Harry to his first White Sox game, but it'll definitely be a few years. Neither of us want to experience changing a diaper in those crowded, gross bathrooms!

You can see my other Flashback Friday posts here. And I would love for other bloggers to play along! Feel free to use my Flashback Friday icon, but please link back to my blog if you do.

Fauxhawk Baby

Part of the reason I was so excited to have a baby boy was the prospect of giving him a fauxhawk. Silly, I know, but I've loved that hairstyle on guys for a long time. Much to my dismay, Ant refuses to get one, despite my constant nagging.

Harry can't say no though! Muwhahaha...

Surprisingly, his hair stayed that way all day yesterday. The first time I fauxhawked his hair, it fell after about 15 minutes. I didn't use anything in his hair except a little Aquaphor along his hairline for his cradle cap.

So cute!

Ii

I know this one is pretty lame, but I couldn't think of anything else and I made pancakes for breakfast this morning.

See my entire 52 ABCs series here!

Look at what others posted this week on Facebook.

It Doesn't Get Any Cuter

My new favorite picture of my baby boo. I'm pretty proud of it. I took it on Saturday, he was loving bath time that night!

This one is definitely going in his baby book. I recently found out about Mpix, and can't wait to get some prints from them.

Designer Duds

I haven't highlighted one of Harry's outfits for a while, so here is what he wore yesterday.

We got this Calvin Klein hoodie at Once Upon A Child last summer. So adorable! His brown corduroy pants are from JC Penny.

Everyday He's Shufflin'

Remember when I posted about how Harry was rotating in his crib? I started putting him to sleep longways in his crib and he stopped. Well, for a month anyways. He's started moving again. His feet have gotten caught in between the slats a couple times and once he even woke up crying because of it.

Since we decided not to put traditional baby bumpers on Harry's crib I thought it was time we put a breathable bumper on his crib. I had a 20% off coupon for Babies R Us so last night we purchased this one for his crib.

If you purchase this one, beware, it's kind of complicated to install. But, I managed to figure it out and now my little baby won't get caught.

Along with the breathable bumper we bought a few other things at Babies R Us.

I'd been looking to get the Fisher Price Love to Play Puppy for a while and received a $5 off coupon the other day, so I just had to get it! The Puppy is just so cute and helps teach kids a lot of the basics. I also had a coupon for buy two toiletries get one free, so I picked out some baby wash and lotion from the new Aveeno organic line and a huge tub of Butt Paste (that stuff works great!).

Not only is Harry shufflin' around his crib but he really seems to want to roll over. Surprisingly, he has been attempting to roll from back to front. I would have guessed he would do front to back because he still hates tummy time. The other day he managed to get half way over, but got stuck and scared himself so Ant had to help him back on to his back.

I took this video of him Sunday night when I really thought he was going to roll over, hoping to catch his first roll on video. No such luck, but as you'll see he's got the right idea. Sorry, it's a pretty long video!

Oscar Fashion Roundup

Welcome to my last awards show post of the season! I believe the Emmys are next, and those aren't until August or September.

Check out my other fashion roundups from this awards season.

Golden Globes
Screen Actors Guild Awards
Grammys

Best

Gwyneth Paltrow

(source)

Hands down my favorite look of the night. The dress by itself was beautiful, but the cape just added so much elegance. And what girl wouldn't want to wear a four inch wide diamond bracelet? Gwyneth took a huge risk with this one and it paid off big time!

Natalie Portman

(source)

Even though I hate don't care for strapless dresses, one always seems to wind up on my Best Dressed list. I really loved the vintage silhouette of this polka dot dress. Natalie's chunky diamond necklace covers up her decolletage nicely, which is why I liked this look. Her makeup was flawless as well.

Shailene Woodley

(source)

I don't think this one will be on many Best Dressed lists, but I loved it! Shailene's look was very sweet and romantic without being overtly sexy. I would have liked the sleeves to be a little tighter and maybe half an inch shorter.

Kelly Osbourne

(source)

For the third straight awards show Kelly has landed on my Best Dressed list, way to go gurrrl! This dress fit her like a glove and the sleeves are very whimsical and fun. I also loved her side swept purple hair. I really hope they give her props on Fashion Police tonight; her dresses haven't been mentioned at all on the show and she totally deserves it (I Tweeted her about it!)

Giuliana Rancic

The E! ladies were on fire last night! G's looks this season haven't been my favorite, but she more than made up for her misses with this dress. I didn't like the sheer panel on her chest, but the dress would fall apart without it, so I'll let it slide. Her hair also should have been less severe, but in general, I really loved this look.

Worst Dressed

Melissa Leo

Just because a polo shirt has gold sequins on it doesn't make it appropriate Oscars attire. This dress just kind of hung off of Melissa, it did nothing for her figure. Bad, bad, bad!

Sandra Bullock

(source)

Another ill fitting dress. Such a shame because Sandra usually looks beautiful. The top of this dress was way too baggy for Sandy's small frame and the appliques around her waist and shoulders were very outdated. If I'd styled her, I would have kept her hair around her face as well.

Emma Stone

(source)

This was such a disappointment. Emma has been looking great all season but this just didn't do anything for me. Not only did I not like the huge bow around her neck, it was kind of a knockoff of a dress Nicole Kidman wore a few years ago (apparently I'm not the only one who thought that, see a comparison here).

Rooney Mara

(source)

I don't like Rooney Mara's style, so it came as no surprise that I didn't like her dress last night. I just wanted to take her straps and pull them up three inches. The way the dress fit her it looked like her boobs were really droopy, when obviously they're not. GAH, those faux saggy boobs are so distracting!

I ended up winning our Oscar ballot. All three of us filled one out. For Harry's I just read off the nominees and which ever one he cooed at was the one we picked for him. I really thought he was going to beat us both, but he ended up coming in third. Apparently watching a few of the nominated movies does help!

So This Is What We Did Last Night

A few weeks ago I challenged Ant to drink a pop out of a baby bottle. Last night he finally took me up on the challenge. I took a little sip, and dang, it was hard! I went to sleep before he finished it but Ant claims to have drank the whole thing through the nipple. We're all kinds of special!

Aside from Coke Zero baby bottles, I also enjoyed a half a glass of Sofia Riesling from the Francis Ford Coppola winery. Fitting for Oscar weekend, no?

I bought it mainly because I love the bottle so much. I'm thinking of painting it and turning it in to some sort of vase. Off to Pinterest to find some ideas! The wine itself was okay, I didn't drink it chilled which might account for why I didn't enjoy it as much as some other Rieslings I've tried.

This afternoon I ran a couple errands and managed to find my way in to Home Goods... I love that store! The one by us is actually a TJ Maxx/Home Goods, so the selection isn't as good as a dedicated Home Goods, but I still had fun looking around. I ended up buying some dried branch/twig/leaf stuff to go in the blue and white urn shown in the above picture. I also found a little yellow dish to go on the shelf as well. I'll try and remember to share a photo soon.

I've been in a total decorating mood lately. Which is fun, but bad for my wallet!

And I can't leave a blog post with out at least one picture of Harry.

He was none too thrilled about slipping down his Boppy.

And in case I don't post tomorrow, I just wanted to say that my pregnancy started exactly one year ago! Yep, February 26, 2011 was the day! I wasn't physically pregnant for a few more weeks, but it was the start of "my cycle," haha. The way pregnancies are calculated is strange, and I didn't fully understand it until I was well in to mine. I think I'll be more excited on the one year anniversary of taking my pregnancy test, March 28th. Hard to believe we found out about Harry nearly a year ago!

First Time Cooking Seafood

Instead of a bath Wednesday night I took Harry in the shower with me. I was a little nervous, but it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. Harry was definitely intrigued by the whole thing and didn't seem to mind getting water in his face. I'll probably take him in the shower once every couple weeks since he really does enjoy taking baths, but I liked having the skin to skin contact with him.

Here's my little stinker hanging out yesterday.

Yesterday was Harry's first full day in size two diapers. I ended up buying another pack of ones because I didn't want to believe he was getting bigger; I was putting him in twos at night though. The twos are still big on him so he should be in them for a few months. And he is still sucking on his thumb. He loves that thing! He is also now grabbing at the toys on his playmat and loves to stare at himself in the mirror. My lil' guy is growing up so fast!

Seafood Suppah
I don't like seafood. Except tuna fish sandwiches;  I love their uber fishy taste.  When we were at Target on Monday Ant saw the Monterey Pasta Lobster Ravioli and just had to try it. Oddly enough, Julie from Peanut Butter Fingers featured the pasta on her blog yesterday.

Last night I made the ravioli for Ant. Since I didn't think I'd like it I just made Kraft Dinner for myself.

Ant said he really enjoyed the pasta. Just don't get used to it Antie-poo... making two meals is too much work for this mama!

I made the largestzucchiniever as a side for both our dishes. I prepared it a bit differently last night and seasoned the zucchini with Italian seasoning instead of just oregano. Don't think I'll do that again, I didn't care for the flavor as much.

And uggh, I just realized today is Flashback Friday! I usually work on those posts in the evening and this week I've been working on the Save the Date cards I told you guys about. Oops! I will try my hardest to get Flashback Fridays up and running again next week.

Winter Blues Card Swap

If you guys read my other blog last year, you might remember that I created the Winter Blues Card Swap. It actually ended up being pretty successful and everyone had a great time doing it. One of last year's participants recently contacted me and asked if I was planning on doing it again this year. At this time I honestly don't have the motivation to get everything organized, so she volunteered to take it over.

Thank you so much, Cheryl!

Cheryl just posted a YouTube video about the swap, so if you're interested go ahead and watch it and send her your info. She is asking everyone to make/purchase five spring-themed cards, which should be sent out to your group members no later than March 7th.

I am participating and can't wait to get started on my cards. Here is the card I sent out last year.

I think this year I might make five different cards, but we'll see. I can't wait to get started on them!

A Few New Things

This morning we did a bit of redecorating and reorganizing. I recently ordered a Keurig K-Cup organizer and it arrived today. I was excited to set it up!

LOVE it! The description on Amazon says the drawer can hold 36 K-Cups, but if you put in every other K-Cup upside down it can actually hold 42.

Last week I mentioned how Ant bought me some wall plaques. I finished painting them the other day and this morning Ant and I hung them up.

I'm really pleased with how they turned out! Before I painted them black they were like a cherry wood color. Pretty, but they didn't match. Speaking of not matching, I would love to paint the TV stand we have the printer on. Either that or replace it with something like this (hint hint, Antie-poo!).

And there's one more new thing at our house.

Harry can now fit in six month clothes! Well, they're still a bit big, but his three month stuff is getting tighter and tighter each day. My aunt bought him this cute outfit for Valentine's Day.

Oh, and I caught him sucking on his thumb this afternoon.

Grrrr. Neither Ant or I were thumb suckers, so I hope Harry didn't mysteriously inherit the thumb sucking gene.

Alright, off to get dinner started. I'm making lemon chicken tonight!

3.5 Month Check Up

That cutie pie was such a little trooper this morning; who woulda guessed that just an hour before I took this picture he was being poked with two large needles? He actually screamed a bit longer than last time after today's round of vaccines, but I think his empty tummy fueled a lot of the screaming.

The pediatrician was very pleased with Harry's growth! He now weighs 13 pounds 6 ounces and is 25.25 inches tall. That's the 50th percentile for weight and holy cow.... 90th percentile for height! The doctor said he never would have guessed he was four weeks premature. With being so on track the doctor suggested we stop giving Harry NeoSure and switch to regular infant formula. Originally he suggested that he stay on it for nine or ten months. Hearing that we could switch was music to daddy's wallet!

After our appointment we swung up to Carter's to use that $10 rewards card we earned yesterday. Today is the last day of the BOGO free sale so I wanted to take advantage while we still could. I picked out a pack of white onesies and a pack of "rock star" onesies, both in the nine month size.

When we got home I make Harry four ounces of Similac Advance; the company sent us a sample tub while I was pregnant. He drank it really quickly and was hungry for more so I made him two ounces of NeoSure. We've still got about three cans of the NeoSure so we're going to slowly switch him over to the Advance so we don't shock his system too much.

I took another video of Harry yesterday. This time he was playing on his playmat, enjoy!

Carters Sale + A Harry Video

This afternoon we went to the Carter's store to take advantage of the BOGO free sale. I also had a coupon for 20% off $40 or more and about $55 left on a gift card. Our $228 worth of stuff totaled out to be $92, but we only had to pay $45 since we had the gift card. And since we bought so much stuff we received a $10 gift card we can use next time.

We picked out mostly six and nine month sized stuff, but one of the packs of onesies is 12 month. Harry is growing like a little weed and I've already put away one three month outfit that's too small. A few others are starting to become snug as well so this sale came at the perfect time!

Harry's First Home Movie
I usually plop Harry in his crib while I make a bottle. Last night was no different, except instead of hunger screams he was babbling away! I quickly grabbed my DSLR and tried out the video feature for the first time.

It's a little blurry and looooong, but I'm so glad I was finally able to capture him on video! As he starts doing more things I'll try and take more videos.

Tomorrow morning we've got another doctor's appointment for Harry. I'm guessing he'll weigh around 13 pounds and be 25 inches long.

Garfield Park Conservatory

We had a fun filled day yesterday! A few weeks ago my friend Tracy told me about the Garfield Park Conservatory and I've been wanting to visit ever since.

After a measly 11 hours of sleep (!!!!!!!!), Harry woke up at 10am (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and we first headed to Oak Park for some lunch.

Ant found the Prairie Bread Kitchen online and thought it would be a perfect spot for some lunch. We both ordered sandwiches that were super yummy!

On our way back to the car we stopped by the Bleeding Heart Bakery for some cupcakes.

I got a chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting and Ant opted for the chocolate with raspberry frosting. So yummy! I love cupcakes that aren't very sweet, and the Bleeding Heart's had just the right amount of sugar. After we finished our cuppycakes we hopped back in the car and drove to the conservatory.

Wow, the conservatory was beautiful! If you're ever in Chicago I would highly recommend putting the conservatory on your to-do list. It is operated by the Chicago Park District and admission is free. Basically, the Garfield Park Conservatory is a gigantic green house. There are five or six rooms, each with a different theme. Our favorite was the desert room, which featured a wide variety of cactuses cacti.

I felt like a total dope for not bringing my new DSLR camera with me. I thought about it but didn't want the hassle of carrying my diaper bag and camera bag so I just brought my point and shoot. Nearly every other visitor had a DSLR, so if you have one, definitely bring it!

After we were done at the conservatory we headed in to the Loop. It was a nice day out so we walked around and eventually strolled in to the French Market. I had heard of this place but hadn't been there before. I was soooo tempted by all the yummy gourmet food but I was good and didn't get anything.

Our walk led us to Ant's office, who was excited to show off Harry to some of his coworkers.

The Ron Swanson bobble head doll was part of our Valentine's gift for Ant, he had been wanting it for his desk.

After we were done at Ant's work we headed home. Per what has become usual, Harry was a very good boy all day. He really didn't fuss once! I still don't know how we got so lucky with such an easy baby. And you guys know we'll be blessed with a spirited child the second child around :).

And moms don't forget, Carter's is having their BOGO free sale right now! We're planning on heading there later today. I've got a Carter's gift card that had been burning a hole in my wallet for a while now.
