Harry's First Christmas

I hope everyone had a nice Christmas! Yesterday was really low key since Ant's work schedule is weird, which was fine by me! We just had pizza for dinner, a new family tradition perhaps? However, Christmas Eve was more traditional.

We met up with my dad's side of the family at the banquet hall where we had our wedding reception. They have really good food but they were out of pasta which was disappointing.

Holding his grandson for the first time!

After dinner we went back to my dad's for a bit.

New Jeans

More photos from today's photo shoot

Earlier tonight the boys and I went to Old Navy, I desperately needed some new jeans. Our Old Navy had a giant clearance section and I was able to find two pairs for just $13 each. I also picked up a couple new tops; it was so nice not to have to shop in the maternity section anymore!

Harry did really well while we were out, he pretty much slept the entire time, which is always good. And now we're just watching Grey's Anatomy on Netflix. Our Friday nights are always so exciting!

Oh, and I promised back in October that I had a few more maternity pictures to share once Harry was born. Here ya go!

Ohhh memories :). I probably should have included these in my post about choosing Harry's name, but better late than never, right? And I still need to do a post on his middle name. If only he would stop growing for a week so I can get caught up on everything.

Oh, and speaking of growing, he has officially grown out of one of his newborn size jumpsuits! This particular jumpsuit was on the smaller size and all of his other clothes still fit, but I'm sure it won't be too long until he is in 0-3 month clothing.

Christmas Photo Op

We are just two days away from Harry's very first Christmas so we thought it would be fun to take some family photos in front of our little Christmas tree. Harry is six weeks and four days old in these pictures.

I bought the ornament at Target, they had quite a few lovely First Christmas ones to choose from. I grew up with the Christmas tradition of getting a new ornament for the tree every year, going to the Hallmark store to pick mine out was always the highlight of the season! Now that I'm a mom I'm excited to pass down traditions like this to Harry (and any other kiddos who might come along some day), and I can't wait to create some new family traditions as well.

Oh, and in case you're not in the holiday spirit yet, here is an article from CNN about seven different Santa Claus'. It's actually really interesting, and I couldn't help but smile as I was reading it :)

Happy Baby... Maybe?

I have the cutest baby evah!

I don't really have much to update on, but I wanted to show off these cute photos I took of Harry yesterday. I used to create the collage.

Sir Harold was in a fussy mood most of the day until like 10:30pm. Then he was super happy and content, and even let out a few coos. Super adorable! He also managed to pull his paci out of his mouth. He's knocked it out countless times, but I was watching him and it looked like he intentionally grabbed it, pulled it out and then tried to put it back in! He wasn't quite able to get it back in his mouth, but it was awesome to see him try.

Then I gave him a bath, and the happiness flew out the window. Usually Harry loves bath time so I don't know what his deal was last night. He cried during the entire bath and for at least 15 minutes afterwards. He must have tired himself out because I was able to put him right to sleep after he took his last bottle around 1am.

Oh, and we'll be switching to size one diapers today. We have just a few Pampers newborns left, which are getting really tight on him. If the size ones end up being too big I'll buy a pack of Huggies newborns because they're a bit bigger than the Pampers. My baby is growing up too fast!

Birth Story
So I know I've not yet posted my birth story, and Harry is six weeks old. I'm nearly finished writing it, so it should be up soon, promise!

6 Week Check Up

The sibs

Harry had his six week well baby check up today. Here are the stats:

     Height: 22 inches, 50th percentile
     Weight: 9 pounds, 25th percentile
Head Circumference: 25th percentile (I don't recall the actual

Our little preemie isn't so little anymore! I think I was in denial about how big he's gotten. I was expecting him to weigh around seven and a half pounds and be about 20 inches long! Harry got a clean bill of health from the doctor, although I did express a few concerns.

This morning around 4:30am Harry woke up suddenly by crying, coughing and spitting up through his mouth and nose. He had done that once before, but not nearly as much as this morning. Doctor Sam said it was nothing to be worried about, sometimes it just happens. I was worried about how often Harry spits up too, but since he continues to gain weight its normal. I also asked about the monthly milestones Harry should be hitting. From what I've read online, preterm babies aren't expected to hit their milestones by their actual age, but by their adjusted age (calculated from their due date). The doctor thinks Harry will hit all his milestones by his actual age because he was a late preterm baby and is growing like a champ. If he's a few weeks behind on some we can blame it on his prematurity, but anything not achieved within a month would be something to look in to.

Harry also had to get a shot today, his second round of the Hep B vaccine I believe. After the shot he had to get some blood drawn to check for anemia. He of course wailed his head off during the procedures but as soon as the nurse was done he calmed down.

Our next appointment is in a month, and he'll be getting two more shots along with some type of liquid vaccine.

And here's a picture of H-man after we got home from the appointment.

Notice how he's wearing a different outfit... he thought it would be fun to pee all over the first one at the doctor's office!

I'm Officially A Mom

We're watching the VH1 Top 40 Countdown of 2011. It's at #30 and I think I've recognized one, maybe two songs. Yep, I'm officially a mom, too busy to care about what's on the radio! Although I'm sure Lady G, Katy P and Adele will be on here, so I'll know a few more.

Another thing that makes me a mom? Cleaning up exploding diapers! What a great way to spend a Saturday night. While I was cleaning up that hot mess he peed and threw up. Ugggh. The damn thing was so out of control we had to give him a bath.

Here's some pictures of my super pooper :)

Just chillin', he loves bath time!

Baby Must Haves- Part 2

I joined Pinterest, and am still getting the hang of it. Not sure if I completely understand the point, but it's kind of fun. Click the link in the left sidebar to follow me!

Harry is nearly six weeks old now, and as I'm starting to get the hang of this OMGIHAVEABABY thang, I thought I'd share a few more items that have made being responsible parent a bit easier. Check out Part 1 here!

Diaper Genie

I love our Diaper Genie II Elite! When Harry first came home we were putting all his diapers in the DG, which obviously caused it to fill up really fast. We now only throw soiled diapers in the DG and wet ones go in to a regular garbage can. We now only have to empty the DG every two to three weeks. Which sounds gross, but the smell is completely contained! I personally haven't ever refilled the thing, but I've seen Ant do it, and it seems simple enough.

Harry in a 0-3 month jumpsuit, still a bit big on him!

Jumpsuits are the best  kind of baby clothes, especially when it's cold outside! I love how one piece of fabric can keep your kid covered from head to toe. No need to mess with separate shirts and pants. Jumpsuits make diaper changes really easy, just unsnap and you're good to go. This is the jumpsuit Harry is wearing in the picture, so adorable!

Shampoo Rinse Cup

Holy cow do I love this thing! I bought the Garanimals rinse cup from Walmart, I think it was around $5. I initially thought Harry's head would be too small for this cup, but the flexible lip on the front conforms perfectly to his head and has never gotten water in his eyes. I usually fill the cup up about half way and pour it over his head twice to get out all the shampoo. Harry doesn't hate bath time, but he does squirm in the water, so the fact that I can rinse his head with just one hand is great!

Aveeno Baby Lotion

Best.Baby.Lotion.Ever. Truth be told it's the only baby lotion I've ever used, but I love it! A couple weeks ago Harry had dry skin all over his body. I used this lotion on him once a day and it completely got rid of it after just a few applications. It's really light and has a nice, subtle scent. I've even used it on myself :) There have been some controversies surrounding some Johnson&Johnson/Aveeno baby products recently, but from everything I've seen its in regards to the shampoos, not lotions.

Male Pattern Baldness

Baldy McGee

My son is balding at the ripe old age of five weeks old. I figured his hair would fall out at some point, but I thought it would fall out evenly, not make him look like this guy.

Jude, is that you?

Hopefully his baldness will even out. When his hair does eventually grow back I have a feeling he'll be a blondie! Ant was bleach blonde as a kid and I was blonde with the help of some bleach.

No four year old should have roots :)

Update to Photo Gate
I went ahead and deleted the person who posted those pictures of Harry from my Facebook, something I should have done a long time ago. They decided to one-up me by blocking me, oh darn.

Bottom line... don't mess with my kid, bitches!

Rolling Over

Yesterday afternoon Harry and I were doing our daily dose of tummy time and he decided he'd had enough, and rolled over on to his back! He was struggling to do it for a few minutes but was able to figure it out. You better believe I was one proud mama! I put him back on his tummy to see if the first time was a fluke. While he wasn't able to do it a second time, he did try for a couple minutes before getting too frustrated. Oh well, we'll try it again later.

I need to take a minute to talk about posting pictures on the internet. We recently dealt with an incident where some unauthorized pictures of my son were posted to Facebook. I don't like the person who posted these pictures and was appalled that they were even taken (thanks to my husband's carelessness). After seeing these photos Ant and I told this person to take them down multiple times. After two days the pictures were finally deleted.

I <3 Print Screen

No one should ever post a picture of someone else's child on the internet with out the parent's consent, regardless of if you love or hate the person. And if a parent tells you to take down a picture you posted, do it. Don't play games with an innocent child's lively hood. A good rule of thumb is if the parent knows the picture was taken, it's okay to post online, if they don't, simply ask for permission. Some parents don't want any pictures of their children on the internet, and again, respect their children regardless of your feelings towards the parents. Now obviously I've posted pictures of Harry online, but I am not comfortable with his photo being taken without my knowledge and then plastered all over Facebook.

Playtex Drop-Ins Review

We've been using the Playtex Drop-Ins bottles for nearly two weeks so I thought I'd do a review on them. In general, I like them. Something to keep in mind when reading my review: there are a ton of different nipple options with the Drop-Ins, and my review is based on using the silicone slow-flow nipples.

Harry modeling a four ounce bottle

Here are the pros and cons.

-Easy Clean Up: Because the Drop-Ins use a disposable liner to hold the formula clean up is a breeze! Obviously I have to clean the nipples after every use, which I do by hand (the silicone nipples are dishwasher safe though). I wash the bottles about once a day to keep them clean.
-Dribble: With the other bottles we were using Harry would always dribble a large amount of formula down his chin and neck. The Playtex nipples seem to fit his mouth much better and has hardly any dribble with them.
-Cost Effective: Some people might argue that Drop-Ins aren't cost effective because you have to keep buying liners, which are around eight to ten cents each. The starter set costs under $20, compared to $30+ for other bottles, I'd say that's a steal! And really, what is eight or ten cents when it means I can spend more time with Harry because I have less to wash?

-Spit Up: The whole reason I started looking for new bottles was because I wanted to try and eliminate the spit up. Many of the reviewers online said how their babies hardly spit up at all with the Drop-Ins because the liner collapses in on itself and prevents the baby from swallowing air. Not the case with Harry. He doesn't spit up after every feeding but he still does it a few times each day.
-Extra Garbage: The liners are one more thing that has to go in the trash. I'm not crazy about being green or anything, but I used to be big on recycling. Unfortunately our condo complex doesn't recycle, so we end up throwing everything away. However, the liners are recyclable.
-Hard To Measure: Measuring how much water you need to make your bottle is a little tricky with the Drop-Ins. The measurements on the larger bottles are inaccurate and the ones on the liners are really hard to see. To get the right amount of water in the bottle I simply fill up a correctly labeled bottle with the right amount of water and dump it in to the liner... problem solved!

I would recommend the Playtex Drop-Ins. Even though they didn't 100% solve our spit up problem I love the convenience of the system.

Okay, its nearly 3am and I think Harry finally fell asleep, he's a night owl like me! Off to get some much needed shut eye :)

The Cat and the Newborn

My two kids

As I mentioned last night, our cat Pearl has been surprisingly good with Harry. Pearl is four years old and is used to getting all the attention she wants, she drinks out of the sink for crying out loud! We were a little concerned that Pearl would be aggressive towards Harry. Fortunately that really hasn't been the case.

Pearl has been great with H-man. She was totes scared of him at first, but is slowly warming up to him. When we first brought Harry home every time he moved Pearl would jump back like two feet, ha! She doesn't do that anymore, and is kind of protective of him sometimes. When I put Harry to sleep in his crib Pearl will sit in the nursery for hours just watching him. Of course I pop my head in every few minutes to make sure she hasn't jumped in the crib.

I've never caught her in the crib, although I did catch her on the changing table...

Silly cat.

With the arrival of Harry we definitely have been giving Pearl less attention. I feel bad but there just isn't enough time in the day to give everyone what they want/need. During the day Pearl is usually fine since she's sleeping a majority of the time, but at night she gets a tad needy. I try playing with her as much as I can but sometimes she acts like a little brat and jumps up on the counters or table just to get some attention.

I'm hoping that once Harry starts to play and be more interactive with Pearl she'll stop being so needy. If I should be so lucky!!

Bed Sharing at the Z House

We're not a bed sharing family. As easy as it would be to let H-man sleep in our bed, both Ant and I find the practice dangerous. Harry sleeps in his Pack n' Play that is right next to our bed, so he's still close to us.

Anyways, this is what "bed sharing" looks like at our house.

She's sticking her tongue out at him, ha!

Pearl was napping comfortably in the PnP alone and I just put Harry in to snap a quick pic with my oldasdirt cell phone. Don't worry, I don't let Pearl sleep with us because I know she would want to curl up with her li'l bro. In general though Pearl has been surprisingly good with Harry. I plan on doing an entire blog post about that, so stay tuned :).

And I have to give a shout out to some of my blog buddies, Liz, Nyla and Haley... all three lovely ladies just had their babies! Congrats!!!

Gotta Get Down on Friday

Harry and I had a great Friday! My friend Tracy came over in the afternoon to meet Harry. I hadn't seen her in a while so it was nice to catch up. She even brought over a few gifts for Harry and me which was so sweet of her. Look at the hooded towel she made for him!

So cute, right?!? Tracy is a crafty girl like myself, in high school we worked at JoAnn Fabrics together. Thank you, Tracy Bear!!! :)

For dinner last night And and I ordered takeout from Chili's. Since we don't yet feel comfortable taking Harry out for our traditional Friday night date nights we decided to bring date night to us! After dinner we watched Young Adult on DVD, one of the movies sent to him as part of the Writers Guild. Ehhh, it was okay. The movie was quite a bit different than I had expected so I think that's why I didn't like it so much. I was expecting it to be more of a comedy, and it was actually pretty dark. I think the movie comes out in theaters next Friday if you're interested. We've got so many movies at our house right now, I think the next one I want to watch is The Descendants.

Here's Harry and me watching the movie last night.

Look ma, no hands!

Ohhhh, and how is it the day I finally decided to file Harry's nails he winds up cutting his face? I should have filed them a while ago but kept putting it off because I was nervous to do it. Fortunately he didn't mind it much and I thought I did a good job. Apparently not! Poor kid :(

1 Month Old

Happy one month birthday, Harry Desmond! Mommy loves you!

Kind of like how I did the weekly bump pictures throughout my pregnancy, I will be doing a monthly picture of Harry. And you all know I'll post them here! I bought the onesie stickers at Word to the wise (and my future self): Put the sticker on the onesie after you put the onesie on the child!

It really is hard to believe Harry is one month old today. What a crazy month it has been! It started out with my 36 week prenatal appointment and finding out I was in labor without even knowing it. It then morphed in to a nearly week-long NICU stay for my little preemie, and now here we are... a happy little family of three!

Harry has been a great baby this past month. He really only cries when he's hungry or wet. Or when he loses his paci, which seems to happen every three minutes, ha! And while he isn't sleeping through the night just yet, he'll sleep up to six hours at a time... this morning he slept from 2am to 8am! However, sometimes he thinks its fun to party until 3am, which is a little rough.

In general, I love being a mom. I've wanted to be a mom for a long time and can't believe I now have a baby to call my own. I'm definitely still learning the ropes, but being a mom has come pretty naturally to me, I definitely have those motherly instincts!

Here are some stats on Harry that I plan on updating each month.

Weight: I'm thinking around the 7 pound mark, maybe 7 1/2
Height: No more than 20 inches I'd imagine
Diaper Size: Newborn Pampers or Huggies
Clothing Size: Newborn
Eating: 2.5-3 ounces of  Similac NeoSure formula 7-8 times a day

Last OB Appointment

This morning I had my last pregnancy appointment with my OB. I was a little sad because I really like the practice I went to. Before getting pregnant I didn't have an OB, so I just searched the internet to find a doctor with privileges at the  hospital I wanted to deliver at. I don't think I would recommend anyone doing that, but it worked out alright for me.

The appointment went fine, although I was kind of caught off guard by having to get a pap (never a fun experience). I'm nearly healed down there, and should be 100% within the next two weeks. Surprise, blood pressure is still a little on the high side, even with taking my labetalol twice a day. I now have to follow up with a primary care physician in three months to determine if I have chronic hypertension or not. My doctor wants me to wait that long to make sure my body is completely back to normal and all the pregnancy hormones are out of my system.

I also asked for a prescription for birth control pills because we definitely don't want Harry to have an Irish twin. Request denied! Apparently the estrogen in birth control pills can mess with your blood pressure, so until I go to the primary care physician I can't get on anything. And if it turns out that I do have chronic hypertension, I can't go on the pill. My two options would be the Depo-Provera shot or Mirena. I definitely am not interested in the Depo-Provera, but will be looking in to Mirena.

My boys came with me to the doctor since we had some errands to run as well. First on the list... returning the breast pump. As painful as it was to return it a month early, the pumping thing just wasn't working and producing less and less breast milk at each session was really taking a toll on me mentally. While exclusively formula feeding was never in my parenting plan, it is what works for our family.

After we were done at the hospital we headed over to the Carter's store. My mother-in-law bought Harry a bunch of clothes that we needed to return. While it was very generous of her to get him so many outfits, most of what she got him were in newborn size. Harry still fits in the newborn size, but I have a feeling he won't be wearing it for much longer. We ended up getting a few three month outfits and have some store credit left over to use next time.

We also popped over to Target to pick up a few random things. Harry did so great all day, he didn't start fussing until we were just about two blocks away from our house... perfect timing!

Here's a picture of my 4 week old from last night's tummy time.

Exactly 4 weeks old

Drunk Uncle

Ant loves Saturday Night Live. Loves it. I, on the other hand, loved it in ohhhhhh, I dunno, eighth grade? Since he loves it so much I'm forced to watch it with him a lot. So of course we watched last night's episode, which was hosted by Steve Buscemi.

I don't find the show that funny anymore, but last night there was a sketch during the Weekend Update segment that was faaaahreaking hysterical.

OMG I was laughing so hard! Thought some of you might get a kick out of it too :).

Pass the Dom Perignon

As you guys know we celebrated our first wedding anniversary yesterday. After we watched the movie we popped open our bottle of Dom Perignon.

Wearing my new charm bracelet!

To celebrate our wedding last year my dad bought us three bottles of Dom. We went through two at our luncheon reception and Ant and I decided to save the third until tonight. It was just as tasty and bubbly as I remember! I savored every drop because I'm willing to bet it will be a looooooong time before I get to try Dom Perignon again.

Along with our fancy schmancy Dom we had some of our wedding cupcakes. Our wedding cupcakes (along with the actual cake we cut at our reception) were from Deerfield's Bakery, and we were pleasantly surprised at how well they held up!

Layer One:

Layer Two:

We had both red velvet with cream cheese frosting and vanilla with dark chocolate frosting. While both year old cupcakes were good, we both thought that the vanilla ones held up better; the red velvet seemed to have lost some of its flavor.

Happy anniversary, boo! Love you... most of the time :).
