Harry Desmond!!!

He was born on Monday, November 7, 2011 at 8:12pm. He weighed 5 pounds 11 ounces and was 19 inches long.

With my blood pressure being so high my doctors thought it was best to deliver yesterday morning. We talked about doing a c-section because they didn't want to put me or baby through the stress of going from 0 to 10 with everything going on, but she decided to check me just in case. Guess what? I was 5 centimeters dilated already! I really thought she was joking when she said it, but nope, I definitely was in active labor and had no clue :). They said he knew he needed to come early!

I'll write a more detailed birth story soon, but wanted to at least get something written down now. I only had to push for 15 minutes and he kind of caught everyone in the room off guard when he just slid out, haha!

Because he is a premie we have had a few issues. Mainly his sugars have been on the low side. Because of that I haven't been able to breastfeed, they put him on formula right away so they could monitor how much he was eating. And just about 45 minutes ago they decided they needed to start him on an IV to get him more sugar :(. I did meet with a lactation consultant who is going to have me start pumping breast milk which I'm happy about.

I'll be in the hospital for at least two more days, and hopefully Harry can join us at home this weekend!!

  1. Oh my gosh. I was thinking about you last night (been lurking, sorry) and was going to write some encouraging words today to tell you to hang in there. And here's your little guy out in the world already! Congratulations (he's really cute!)!

I'll keep you both in my thoughts that he'll make great progress and that you'll be able to pump successfully!

  2. CONGRATS!! This is all so wonderful! Can't wait to hear updates on YT!

  3. awe, he's beautiful and thats so amazing that he knew he needed to get outta there! the human body sure is amazing!

try not to be discouraged about giving him formula, all is not lost...you can do it, mama! if you can, i would request a SNS (supplemental nursing system) to use instead of giving him the formula via bottle. its a bottle that the formula goes in, it hangs around your neck and there is a tube that gets taped to your nipple...that way baby latches on to the breast, but is receiving formula through the tube. that way you know how much babe is eating, your breasts still receive a signal to make milk, and babe doesn't get used to artificial nipples.

also, as a fellow midwestern mama (i'm in milwaukee), please be aware that there are a LOT of circumcision myths and misinformation floating around in our neck of the woods :( please take the time to check out these links:
and this is a really great 5 part series from PsychologyToday:
