Houston, We Have Latch On!

I was discharged from the hospital yesterday afternoon, but unfortunately we had to leave Harry behind. That was really hard. I managed to keep it together until we were just about to go to bed last night. Then I just lost it. I mean, the first night home from the hospital a mother isn't supposed to get any sleep, and I didn't have my baby with me to keep me awake. I didn't end up sleeping well, but it wasn't for the right reasons.

My sweet Harry Desmond
Latching On
Last night while we were visiting the NICU I was able to try and breastfeed Harry for the first time. We worked with a lactation consultant, and Harry was able to latch on right away! I was nervous it wouldn't happen because we didn't start right away and he sometimes has trouble latching on to a bottle, but he was a natural! My milk still hasn't come in really so he didn't get much more than a few drops of colostrum, but it's a start.

This morning we were able to try again. More success! He was really awake and alert while we were there so he was going to town :). After about five minutes he got a little frustrated, I think because he was hungry and wasn't getting much, so we switched to the bottle. He ate the whole thing! The next time we visit him he'll be required to eat a little more formula than he's gotten used to, so we might have to use the feeding tube for part of the feeding.

We rented a breast pump from the hospital so I've been using that to help my milk come in. I'm hoping I'll be able to bring some milk with me so he can get all of it's benefits. Since he's on the high calorie formula he can't eat straight breast milk just yet, but we can mix it with the formula.

We don't really have a time frame for when Harry will be joining us at home, but he is moving in the right direction, which is all we can ask for at this point. Ohhhh how I love my little man!

  1. Aww, so glad he is making progress!! and I so hope that he will be able to go home with you soon!! Stay strong. Oh Lindsey, no joke, he is absolutely ADORABLE !!!! :)

  2. That's awesome that he latched on!! He is so adorable. :)

  3. So glad he is making progress and you can visit him a lot. He is super cute!

  4. Hi Lindsey, I've been viewing your video and blogs and I want to say congratulations on your new blessing. I had my daughter 5 1/2 weeks early due to preeclampsia. She was born at 3 lbs and 13 oz and she spent 8 days in the nicu. I know how it feels to go home with flowers, balloons and teddy bears without a baby. I had to wake up every three hours to use the breast pump. I spent my days in the NICU. Just keep trying your best with the breast feeding and don't give up as long as he is getting a little bit of your breast milk a day is better than not getting any of it. Good Luck and congrats on being a new mommy.

by the way my daughter is 3 1/2 now and she wear size 5 clothes.
